Eagles Ready for Tennessee Relays

The Green and White returns to Knoxville for the third consecutive season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team preps to compete in the 52nd Tennessee Relays hosted by University of Tennessee, April 11-13. 

Returning to the event for the third consecutive year, the Eagles look to carry on its recent successes at the Relays. EMU's trip to the 2018 relays saw the team collect seven top-10 efforts while marking 12 top-collegiate performances, April 12-14. Friday saw former Eagle Jasmine Jones record the third-fastest 200m time in program history, crossing the finish line in 23.50 for a 12th-place finish, while fellow senior Alsu Bogdanova earned her top 1500m effort with a time of 4:20.96, good for third overall. The Eagles closed out the weekend with two top-10 efforts in the 400m and 1600m relays, placing fourth and eighth, respectively. The 400m squad of Jones, then-juniors Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) and Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), and then-sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) ran the relay in 45.39, the fifth-fastest time in the Eastern record books, while the 1600m team of then-freshmen Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) and Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy.C Start), Johnston, and Jones crossed the finish line in 3:42.80. 

The Eagles most recently competed in the Spartan invitational hosted by Michigan State University, April 5-6. The sophomore trio of Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception), Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson), and Gibson led the way for the Green and White, each earning top-five finishes throughout the weekend. Clarke recorded a third-place finish in the Hammer Throw with a career-best toss of 50.68m to mark the fifth-best heave in program history, while Washington earned the Eagles' lone event title of Friday, placing first in the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.25m. Saturday saw Gibson collect two event titles with the top finishes in both the 100m and 200m with times of 12.32 and 24.64, respectively.

The Tennessee Relays kick off Thursday, April 5 with the Heptathlon and Decathlon, set to begin at 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday's competitions are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Live results will be available here, and live updates throughout the weekend's competition can be found on the Eagles' twitter account, @EMUWXC_TF.
