Clarke and Washington Lead Eagles at Day One of Spartan Invite

The duo recorded an event win and a top-10 program performance in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by the sophomore duo of Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception) and Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson), the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team kicked off its time at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University with an event win and a top-10 program record Friday, April 5.
Washington earned the Eagles' lone event title of the day, placing first in the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.25m. Her jump cleared .23m more than the rest of the field of competition, besting athletes from MSU and Sienna Heights University. Also earning a top-five placement was freshman Correena Saintilmond (Miami, Fla.-Hallandale), clearing 10.62m for fifth place.
Clarke recorded a third-place finish in the Hammer Throw with a career-best toss of 50.68m to mark the fifth-best heave in program history. The effort also is the 10th-best throw by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season. Additionally, sophomore Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) registered a 22nd-place finish with a throw of 39.63m.
Rounding out the day's competition was senior captain Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio-Celina) and sophomore Graysen Simmons (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) competing in the pole vault, finishing seventh and tied for 16th, respectively. Carr cleared 3.57m, the ninth-best effort by a conference athlete this season, while Simmons cleared 3.12m.
The Eagles continue competition at the Spartan Invitational Saturday, April 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the 1500m unseeded sections. Live results will be available here, or by following the team's twitter account @EMUWXC_TF.
