Owings Named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week

The junior infielder has earned the honor twice in 2019
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - After a stellar week on the diamond, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) of the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was named the Mid-American Conference's Scholar Athlete of the Week, for the period ending March 31, the league office announced Wednesday, April 3.
Owings is now a two-time winner of the award, after being honored for first time in his career earlier this season, on Feb. 20.
Owings led the Eastern Michigan University baseball team in its two wins over the University of Northwestern Ohio, March 26, and Concordia University (Mich.), March 27, respectively, before putting together a strong three games at Miami, March 29-31. During the five-game stretch, Owings compiled a .500 batting average, going 11-for-22 at the plate with four extra-base hits, and eight RBIs.
In his best performance of the week, against Concordia, Owings blasted his first career grand slam as part of a 3-for-4 hitting performance. In addition to his 11 hits, Owings tallied 18 total bases and did not strikeout during the week.
Owings, a returning First Team All-MAC selection, is putting together his strongest season as an Eagle, in 2019. The power-packing infielder currently ranks in the Mid-American Conference's top-10 in six offensive categories, including hits, triples, home runs, RBIs, at-bats, and slugging percentage.
Owings and the Eagles return to the diamond Wednesday, April 3, where they begin a four-game homestand with a single game against Oakland University. Following Wednesday's contest, Eastern welcomes MAC-opponent Bowling Green to Ypsilanti for a three-game weekend series, Fri.-Sun., April 5-7.
