Eagles See Five Top-15 Performances in Dual-Meet Friday

EMU competed at both the Hillsdale “GINA” Relays and Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team continued its dual-meet weekend Friday, April 26, competing at the Hillsdale "GINA" Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College and the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by the Ohio State University.
At the Jesse Owens Classic, senior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) secured a second-place finish in the javelin throw with a heave of 65.73m, the Eagles' top finish of the day and almost three meters further than the third-place finisher. Finishing six places behind him was freshman Garrett Wade (Rio Rancho, N.M.-V.Sue Cleveland), earning eighth overall with a throw of 57.60m.
In other field efforts, sophomore Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) led the way in the hammer throw, finishing 15th with a mark of 52.41m. Also competing in the hammer throw was senior Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio-Medina), finishing just behind Stephenson in 16th with a 52.04m throw.
On the track, sophomore Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario, International School of Dusseldorf) ran the 1500m, earning a 14th-place finish. Day's time of 4:04.60 was almost one second faster than the 15th place finisher.
Junior Dan Kuhn (Erie, Pa.-Harbor Creek) and sophomore Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Licoln) competed at the Hillsdale "GINA" Relays, placing 23rd and 11th in the 800m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively. Costa recorded a career-best time of 9:46.48 in the steeplechase, while Kuhn finished the 800m in 1:59.81.
Also competing at the relays were graduate transfer Melika Ghali (Toronto, Canada-Jarvis Collegiate Institute (Boise State)) and freshman Baldvin Magnusson (Hull, England-Hull University), who both competed in the 5000m Championship Heats. Ghali finished fourth with a time of 14:36.10, while Magnusson marked a time of 15:05.19 for 18th overall.
The Eagles complete their busy weekend of competition at the Jesse Owens Classic Saturday, April 27, with events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. Live results for the classic will be available here, while frequent updates on the Eagles' performances will also be provided on the team's twitter page, @EMUMXC_TF.
