NOBLESVILLE, Ind, (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 19-21, hosted by Central Michigan University at Purgatory Golf Club. The three-day event will consist of 54-holes on the par-72, 5,991-yard course for the 10 MAC schools that sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.
The Eagles enter the tournament with the 13th lowest four-player team scoring average in program history at 312.5. Overall, Eastern Michigan has finished in the top-five at three different tournaments this season, including most recently a fourth-place finish at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 6-7.
Individually, sophomore Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) leads the team with an average of 77.36. Senior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) follows Sripatrprasite closely with a 77.94 season average, while junior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) has put together a solid campaign of her own, scoring an average of 79.05 this year.
First-year Head Coach Stephanie Jennings and the Eagles look to spoil Kent State's run at history. The Golden Flashes have won 20 straight league championships, last year winning the tournament by 57 strokes after shooting a MAC Championship record of 11-under par 853 (282-285-286).
The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 10 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (94), Western Michigan (114), Northern Illinois (118), Bowling Green (183), Akron (186), Ball State (190), Eastern Michigan (198), Ohio (207), and Central Michigan (232).
At last year's MAC Championship, Eastern Michigan finished in fifth-place with a three-day cumulative score of 932 (305-309-318). Guilleux finished in 10th-place with a three-day score of 226 (75-76-75), while Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) took 13th shooting a 229 (74-76-79) across the 54-hole event.
EMU has been the most likely candidate to challenge Kent State for the top spot at the event, as the Eagles' seven runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship since 2003 are the most of any team in the league. The Green and White has placed second in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015.
Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Toledo (2006, 2014, 2016, 2018), Ball State (2010, 2012), Western Michigan (2004), and Northern Illinois (2017) are the only other teams to record a second-place finish in the history of the tournament.
The winner of the 2019 MAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional round, May 6-8, at one of the four regional locations. The possible sites include East Lansing, Mich., Elum, Wash., Opelika, Ala., and Norman, Okla. Followed by the NCAA Championships set to be May 16-22 at Blessings Golf Course in Johnson, Ark.
The tournament will begin Friday with EMU's tee times starting at 11:50 a.m. Eastern's lineup will consist of Sripatrprasite, junior Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford), junior Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-Tampa), Connelly, and freshman Green Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School).
Live scoring will be available via Golfstat Live. Unofficial scores will be reported every three holes. The four lowest scores of the team will count each day as a team total. To follow the live scoring at the 2019 MAC Women's Golf Championship, click here.
