CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had 10 athletes earn Academic All-Mid American Conference honors for the 2018-19 indoor season, the conference office announced Wednesday, March 27.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Receiving the honors for the Green and White were: seniors Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio-Medina), Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich.-Avondale), and Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), junior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage), and sophomores Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), Hayelom Fitsum (Denver,  Colo.-Denver School of Science and Technology), Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Preparatory), Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), and Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney)

Wicker is one of just three conference athletes to register a perfect 4.0 grade point average, as Central Michigan University's John Mitrzyk and Kent State University's Kevin Jones each also recorded a 4.0.

The Eagles come off a strong 2018-19 indoor season, earning a runner up finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Kent State University, Feb. 22-23.  The Green and White collecting five individual titles and both relay titles throughout the weekend, good for a point total of 153.5, but fell just 2.5 points shy of securing back-to-back conference titles. EMU picked up 10 All-Mid American Conference selections, as Costa, Day, Jones, Richardson, and Wicker were among the Eagles' First Team All-MAC Selections, while Wicker took home the Green and White's lone Second Team All-MAC award. The team also secured three specialty awards for the team's performance throughout the conference championships, as assistant coach Sterling Roberts was named Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, while sophomore Day was tabbed Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer and Underwood was named the conference's Most Valuable Performer.

The Eagles head to the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University March 29-30. For more information on the Eagles' upcoming competition, including live meet results and a meet schedule for the Raleigh Relays, visit the Men's Track and Field Schedule page at EMUEagles.com.
