YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a sluggish second quarter, coming up short against Central Michigan University, 87-60, Saturday, March 2, inside the Convocation Center.
EMU (12-15, 5-11 MAC) fought back with a season-high 30 points in the third quarter, but CMU (22-6, 13-3 MAC) managed to clinch its fourth consecutive MAC West Division title and third straight MAC regular season crown.
Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) paced the Eagles with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, five boards, and four steals while contributing three assists. Freshman Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) added 11 points, four rebounds, and a team-best six helpers, while Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) notched 10 points in 16 minutes of game action. Redshirt freshman Ja'Bria Knight (Canton, Ohio-East Canton) came off the bench in the closing stages and knocked down her first career field goal, marking her first points since going 2-of-2 from the charity stripe versus Kent State, Feb. 13.
EMU shot a stunning 75 percent (12-of-16) during the third quarter and ended the afternoon at a 39.7 percent (23-of-58) clip overall, while CMU finished 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the floor and 50 percent (13-of-26) from downtown. The Eagles out-stole the Chippewas, 10-4, and recorded more points in the paint (30-28), points off turnovers (14-13), and fastbreak points (14-10).
A jumper from freshman Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) gave EMU a 9-8 edge near the halfway mark of the first period, but the Green and White burned a timeout after CMU responded with a 7-0 run to go ahead, 15-9. Lewis and Cardwell cut the Eagles' deficit to 15-13 late in the opening quarter, but the Chippewas stormed back with a 23-2 run and took a 40-19 lead into the break.
EMU's fortune started to change early in the second half, as Cardwell netted five unanswered points to close the gap to 45-26 with 7:46 remaining in the third.
Lewis also contributed a corner three as the Eagles trailed, 49-31, with 6:12 left in the same period.
The Eagles continued to rally against their in-state rival, using a 7-0 run to narrow the gap to 12 with fewer than four minutes to go in the third frame. However, this was as close as the Green and White would get as the Chippewas pulled away in the final frame to secure an 87-60 decision.
Eastern Michigan wraps up its home slate with a Senior Day showdown against the University of Toledo Wednesday, March 6. The Eagles will honor senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) along with redshirt seniors Lorraine Enabulele (Ajax, Ontario, Canada-Notre Dame (Kansas)) and Emoni Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif.-Long Beach Polytechnic (Michigan)). Tipoff between EMU and UT is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Senior Day festivities scheduled to begin around 6:50 p.m.
