The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team put a lid on its outdoor season-opening effort Saturday, March 16, competing at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Ga. EMU began its 2019 outdoor campaign with ten top-10 finishes, including four top-3 finishes, in addition to recording the seventh-fastest 4x100 Relay time in program history.

Eastern Michigan's 4x100 Relay team kicked off the season with a silver medal performance, as senior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), and juniors Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet) crossed the finish line in 45.38, just .1 second behind first-place finisher University of North Carolina. The Green and White's squad bested relay groups from Clemson University and the University of Pittsburgh on its way to a second-place finish and a spot in the Eastern Michigan record books.

Johnston also earned second overall in the 400m, where her time of 54.65 was just .27 off the lead.  Her efforts topped runners from Clemson University, Dartmouth University, and host Georgia Tech. The Toledo, Ohio native also placed seventh in the 200m, the best finish of any Eagle with a time of 24.74.

Ganther and Mason also prospered in their individual events, as Ganther earned top-10 finishes in both the 100m and 200m with times of 12.01 and 25.05, respectively. Mason tied for eighth place in the 200m, crossing the finish line with a time of 12.05.

Rounding out Eastern Michigan's podium finishes were senior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson), who each earned third place with efforts in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, respectively. Goff cleared 5.56m on her way to her podium finish, while Washington's jump of 11.82m surpassed the fourth-place finisher by more than .1 meters.

Also claiming a top-ten finish at the Invitational was freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton), leaping through the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.18.

EMU now looks ahead to a split-squad weekend of competition, March 28-30, as the Eagles send student-athletes to run in the Bobcat Invitational, Texas Relays, and Stanford Invitational. For more information on all three meets, visit the Women's Track and Field Schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
