EMU Starts Outdoor Season On A High Note

Eagles record three event titles in performance at Yellow Jacket Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by seniors Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) and Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley), the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team saw a strong start to its outdoor campaign Saturday, March 16, at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Ga.
Underwood and Hart earned two of the three Eagles' event titles at the Invitational in the 400m and Long Jump, respectively. Underwood continued his success from the indoor season with a career-best outdoor 400m run, finishing in 46.85, while Hart snagged the Long Jump title with a leap clearing 7.15m.
EMU's other event win came from the 4x100 meter relay squad of seniors Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) and Underwood, junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples), and sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), crossing the finish line in just 40.62. The Eagles' squad bested teams from the University of North Carolina and Kennesaw State University en route to its podium-topping finish.
The day saw 19 personal-best efforts from the Green and White, leading to nine top-5 marks throughout Saturday's competition. On the track, Posada recorded a personal-best 100m time of 10.62, good for a second-place finish, while also earning his top collegiate performance in the 200m, placing fourth with a time of 21.50. Additionally, Underwood also earned a top-five finish in the 200m, finishing just .04 seconds behind Posada for fifth overall.
Senior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) earned a bronze finish in the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 6:04.07, followed closely by freshman Baldvin Magnusson (Hull, England-Hull University), finishing just .24 seconds behind Costa for fifth overall. 2019 Mid-American Conference Most Outstanding Indoor Track Performer sophomore Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) notched his top 800m outdoor effort en route to a fourth-place finish, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:53.28.
In the field events, senior Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome) recorded a new outdoor top performance, clearing 4.70m in the pole vault for third place. Alongside Hart, junior Carlos Sanchez Juan (Onil, Spain-Ies La Creueta) earned fourth place with a leap of 7.08m, his career-best outdoor effort.
