SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – In a star-studded field that featured six top-100 ranked teams, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team proved up to the task with a fifth-place finish Saturday, March 10, at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. The Eagles closed with a final round 301 to finish with an 875 (283-291-301) on the par-72, 7,107-yard Outlaw Course at the Desert Mountain Golf Club.
Mississippi State posted a 856 (280-279-297) to roll to a six-stroke victory over No. 38 Kansas (862). No. 41 Marquette (871), No. 44 Northwestern (872), and EMU rounded out the tournament's top five. The Bulldogs made it a clean sweep, as MSU's Garrett Johnson took home medalist honors with a 207 (66-72-69).
Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) notched his sixth career top-10 showing to pace the Eagles with a one-over 217 (69-72-76). He was the highest finisher in the tournament from a Mid-American Conference school, one stroke better than Miami's Jack Ebner.
Sophomore Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) and redshirt freshman Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) shared 17th-place with a 54-hole mark of 221. Collins fired rounds of 70, 73, and 78, while Mason notched his a personal-best over the three rounds with marks of 75, 75, and 71.
Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) shot a 223 (74-71-78), while Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) rounded out the lineup with a 224 (70-78-76).
EMU now heads to the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, March 16-17, at in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
