EMU Defends DMR Title, Sits in Second After Day One of MAC Championship

Seven Eagles qualify for tomorrow's final heats in their respective events

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team closed out day one of Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship competition Friday, Feb. 22, inside Kent State Field House. The Eagles ended their first day of the path to a conference title with a first-place finish in the Distance Medley Relay, defending their 2018 title with a time of 10:04.71.
The Distance Medley team of sophomores Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Preparatory), Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), and Treston White (Lockport, N.Y.-Lockport) secured the Eagles' lone event title of the day, besting second-place finisher University of Akron by more than two seconds.
The Eagles currently sit in second place with 32 points, just four points behind first-place Akron, who totaled 36 points throughout Friday's competition. Kent State University is third at 27 points, with University at Buffalo and Central Michigan University rounding out the standings with 20 and eight points, respectively.
EMU's other podium finish came from sophomore Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), who placed second in the 5000m run with a time of 14:37.54. Closing out the top-five finishers in the distance dash was senior Melika Ghali (Toronto, Canada- Jarvis Collegiate Institute) with a time of 14:49.55.
In the field events, two Eagles registered fourth-place performances in the Weight Throw and Long Jump. Sophomore Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla-Edmond Memorial) earned his placement with a heave of 18.82m and junior Carlos Sanchez Juan (Onil, Spain-Ies La Creueta) marked a jump of 7.31m in the Long Jump.
Eastern Michigan will send seven tracksters to the final heats of their respective events Saturday, including three runners to the 200m and 60m Hurdles, two s to the 400m, and two sprinters to the 60m dash. Senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) continued his success of the 2018-19 campaign, qualifying for both the 200m and 400m finals, with a career-best time of 21.38 in the 200m and the top preliminary heat time of 47.11 in the 400m. The Eagles' 200m preliminary runs sent all three runners to tomorrow's final heat, as sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) and junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High) qualified with times of 21.46 and 21.64, respectively. Richardson will also run alongside Underwood in the 400m finals, as his time of 47. 81 was the third-best seen in the preliminary heats, while Posada will also run in the 60m finals.
The Green and White also saw all three runners move onto the final heats in the 60m Hurdles, as junior Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Westland), freshman Payne Wylie (Saskatchewan, Canada-Colonsay School), and senior Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio-Madison Comprehensive) cleared the obstacles in 8.16, 8.21, and 8.24 seconds, respectively. In the 60m dash, Posada and senior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) both qualified for tomorrow's deciding heats, with times of 6.83 and 6.94, respectively.
Sophomore multis athlete Skyler Lester (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) completed four of the Heptathlon's seven events on Friday, recording career-best efforts in all of the day's performances. His high jump cleared 2.06m to tie for the top finish, while he marked a second-place shot put effort of 12.87, followed by a tied-for-fourth-place long jump of 6.80m, and a 60m dash time of 7.21, good for sixth place.
