Gymnastics Finishes Third at George Washington Quad

Dobronics and Bezold both hit 9.900's on the day

WASHINGTON D.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team finished third at the George Washington Quad, Friday, Feb. 22. Kent State University earned first place with 195.550, followed by host George Washington University's 195.350. The Eagles 194.225 topped Towson University's 192.875 and was highlighted by a season-best 49.250 on floor.

"We started out shaky on beam, but I was proud of how we bounced back on floor with a season-high 49.250," Head Coach Katie Minasola said. "We finished strong on bars with another season-high and had a lot of great performances throughout the day. I am looking forward to putting it all together." 

Eastern caught flight on floor with its best rotation of the day. Junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) topped the rotation with 9.900, tying for first, and became the first Eagle of the season to post a 9.900-or-better. Dobronics has now earned 9.900 on floor twice, the last time being against Kent State last season. Freshmen Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) both posted career-highs, earning 9.875 and 9.825, respectively. Sophomore Jada Rondeau's (Noorwood Young America, Minn.-Central) contributed a strong 9.850, while senior Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) and junior Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) hit 9.800's. 

Finishing with a season-best 48.950 on bars, sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) highlighted the rotation with a huge 9.900, earning first place and a new-career high. Rondeau's 9.850 was good to tie for second, while senior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) put up a 9.775.

On beam, Dobronics led the way with 9.800, followed by Rondeau's 9.775. Hultgren and sophomore Bri Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) both chipped in 9.675's as the Eagles finished with a total of 48.100.

Smith earned the highest score on vault with a 9.850, and was followed by Dobronics' 9.750, while EMU finished with a score of 47.875.

In the all-around competition, Dobronics ended the day with 39.175, earning second, while Rondeau's 39.000 was good for third.

The Eagles return home to the Convocation Center to compete against Big Ten Conference foe, Michigan State University, Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. The action will be on ESPN3 or follow alone on EMUEagles.com live stats.
