YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team used a dominating effort on the glass to take down the University of Akron, 67-60, Wednesday night, Feb. 20, inside the Convocation Center. Behind a 50-29 rebounding advantage, the Eagles swept the season series with the Zips for the first time in program history.
Akron (14-10, 5-8 MAC) used an 8-2 run to take a one-point, 33-32, lead early in the third quarter, but Eastern (12-12, 5-8 MAC) reclaimed the lead and never looked back. Defensively, sophomore Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds, while Cardwell and freshman Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) grabbed seven apiece to lead EMU to its highest rebounding total since grabbing 51 in a double-overtime clash at Buffalo, Jan. 27, 2018.
The Eagles maintained control throughout the game, holding the lead for over 35 minutes. Eastern's bench put away 15 points, while Akron's was held scoreless. The Green and White held the advantage, 38 to 24.
UA got out to an 8-4 lead, but a three-pointer by freshman Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) and layups by Johnson and Minott made up an 11-0 EMU run to give Eastern a 15-8 lead after one period.
The Green and White extended its lead to eight on a Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) layup with 1:02 in the second quarter, but a triple moments later cut EMU's advantage to five, 30-25, at the half.
Eastern and Akron battled throughout the third with the Zips staking their first lead since the opening period, 33-32, at the 7:19 mark. The Eagles continued to capitalize on defensive stops, taking a 12-point buffer, 57-45, halfway through the fourth set.
