EMU advanced past Loyola-Chicago before falling to Bowling Green in the night cap

DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team opened its spring season on Monday, Feb. 11, by posting an 0-1-1 record at the Eighth Annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play on the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course.  The No. 1 seed Eagles advanced past eighth-seeded Loyola University-Chicago on tiebreakers in the opening round before falling to No. 4 seed Bowling Green State University, 4-2.

Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.

The Eagles won the event in 2015 and 2016 while taking second at the 2012 and 2014 events. In the eight years of the event, Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has posted a 15-8 record in match play.

In the opening round, Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) got the Eagles on the board first with a 3&2 decision. The Toronto, Ontario native fell behind by as many as two holes on the front side, before rallying to win five of the next nine holes to close it out 3&2. Meanwhile, Tyler Rayman (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) recorded a 2-up victory again after going down two holes through six to Nate Vance. Rayman bounced back to win holes seven, eight, nine, and 10 to never relinquish the advantage the remainder of the match.

Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) built a quick lead after winning four of the first five holes to hold on for the 2&1 win. Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) dropped his match, 3&2, while Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) came up short against Orion Yamat, 2-up.

With the match still undecided, Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) clawed back from an early four hole deficit to tie the match as the players headed to the backside. The Long Sault, Ontario native took his first lead with a win on No. 10, but Devin Johnson edged out a victory on No. 17 to push him to the 1-up victory. So, with the team score tied at 3-3, it all came down to tiebreakers with the Eagles winning out to advance to play Bowling Green.

In other first round action, No. 2 Miami advanced past No. 7 Drake on tiebreakers, No. 3 Ball State bested No. 6 DePaul, 3.5-2.5, and No. 4 BGSU advanced past No. 5 Ohio, 5-1.
Unfortunately, there was not as much drama in the afternoon for the Eagles in the matchup with the Falcons. Bowling Green closed out Eastern in four matches before reaching the 18th hole. Breault bounced back to post a 5&3 decision over Rodrigue Vie, while Collins also notched a 5&3 victory for EMU's lone wins of the match.

Eastern Michigan will take on Ball State Tuesday, Aug. 11, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live stats will be available courtesy of GolfStat.
