Volleyball Falls to Kent State in Five-Set Showdown

11/9/2019 7:49:00 PM | Volleyball

Cassie Haut tallied 19 kills for the Green and White

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Fresh off a straight-set sweep of Mid-American Conference West Division leader Central Michigan, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was back on the court tonight, Nov. 9, against MAC East-foe Kent State University. A five-set thriller, EMU fought back from a 2-1 deficit, but eventually fell, 3-2.

Eastern (10-16, 5-9 MAC) was paced by redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe), who turned in a 19-kill, eight-dig performance, while hitting .308. Fellow senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) was also outstanding, contributing 53 assists for the Green and White.

Down a set, 2-1, the Eagles played an inspired fourth frame. Behind by one point, 16-15, Eastern went on an impressive run, winning the next six points to take a 20-16 lead. EMU closed the game out, winning 25-19, and sending the match to a fifth, and final, frame.

Despite EMU's best efforts, Kent State (13-13, 6-8) proved too powerful in the fifth set. With the score tied, 3-3, the Golden Flashes went on a 12-5 run, closing the final set out, 15-9.

The match's first set proved ultra-competitive, as both squads hit at better than .250 while neither took a lead of more than three points in the frame. Despite a distribution of offensive firepower that saw five Eagles register multiple kills, including three a-piece from Haut, junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), and sophomore Julia Fisher (Kailua, Hawaii-Le Jardin Academy), Kent State outpaced the EMU, hitting .314 and racking-up 18 total kills en route to a 25-23 victory.

Behind early in the second set, 7-4, Eastern found its stride, going on a 4-0 run to take the lead, 8-7, and force a Kent State time out. From there, the Eagles soared, hitting at an impressive .323 clip on its way to a commanding seven-point set win, 25-18.

Tied at one set a-piece, the Golden Flashes were able to regain the advantage. The Eagles regressed to just a .140 hitting percentage in the third set, allowing KSU to emerge victorious, 25-19. Undeterred by the result, Eastern took the fourth set in dominating fashion.

Although EMU battled to force a fifth set, it ultimately fell, three sets-to-two.

In the hunt for a MAC Tournament bid, Eastern is back in action Friday, Nov. 15, at Ball State. The team will close its regular season at Toledo, Saturday, Nov. 16. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU volleyball, visit EMUEagles.com
