YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team maintained its perfect start to the season with a 72-59 win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn Thursday, Nov. 14, inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (3-0) wrapped up their season-opening, three-game homestand with their second victory in as many head-to-head matchups against Michigan-Dearborn (6-0).
Redshirt senior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)) paced EMU as he set season-highs with 15 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the campaign. Freshman Chris James (Long Beach, Calif.-St. John Bosco) also set a personal-best with 15 points off the bench in addition to six boards and a pair of steals.
Junior Noah Morgan (Mount Vernon, N.Y.-Mount Vernon (Northwest Florida State)) tallied a career-high 12 points in his return to the starting lineup, while fellow junior Yeikson Montero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic-Redemption Christian Academy (Pensacola State)) contributed 10 points and five boards as he led the Eagles with four assists and three swipes. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Chris Barnes (Compton, Calif.-Compton (Tulsa)) recorded 10 bench points along with a pair of rebounds and helpers.
The Eagles shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor during the opening half and finished at 40 percent (26-of-65) overall, while the Wolverines ended the night with a 42 percent (21-of-50) efficiency. EMU used its size advantage to out-rebound Michigan-Dearborn, 46-30, and tallied more points in the paint (32-18), fast-break points (13-2), and steals (14-8) than the visitors.
Trailing by a 10-7 margin early in the contest, Barnes knocked down a jumper to cut EMU's deficit to one, before Morgan and James buried a pair of triples to put the Green and White ahead, 15-10, with 12:18 left in the first half. UMD bounced back to knot the game at 15 apiece, but the Eagles scored nine unanswered points to open up a 24-15 advantage with 7:49 left in the opening frame. In total, the Eagles pulled away with a 26-4 run lasting more than nine minutes to build a commanding 41-19 lead with 3:39 to play in the opening frame.
The Eagles never relinquished their double-digit advantage during the second half. After the Green and White called a timeout holding a 52-41 edge with 12:04 to go in regulation, they tacked on a 14-0 run to capture their biggest lead of the night, 66-41, with 7:55 on the clock. Michigan-Dearborn knocked down seven three-pointers in the final stanza to produce a more flattering scoreline, but EMU fended off its NAIA opposition, 72-59.
