Soccer Falls to Bowling Green in MAC Tournament Championship

The Eagles fell in penalty kicks, 0-0 (1-3)

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team ended their season with a heartbreaking penalty kick loss in the Mid-American Conference tournament championship game to top-seeded Bowling Green State University, 0-0 (1-3).

In 110 minutes, both teams were unable to create many scoring chances. At the end of regulation, only four shots were on target between the two teams, with Bowling Green holding the advantage, three-to-one.

In the 26th minute, Eastern earned a free kick near the top of the box. Redshirt junior Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Mother Theresa) found redshirt senior Kristin Hullibarger (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) in the box, but Bowling Green's goalkeeper made the diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Remedios would create another chance for the Green and White in the first overtime period when the Falcons were called for a foul right outside the EMU box. Remedios took the kick, but it found it the hands of the Falcons' keeper to keep the game scoreless and force penalty kicks.

Junior Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Theresa) made two saves in four rounds of penalty kicks, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize and ultimately fell, 0-0 (1-3).

Bowling Green led the Eagles in shots, 14-to-nine, while also having the advantage in corners, seven-to-two.

Following the match, Abbotts, Hullibarger, and redshirt junior Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) were named to the All-Tournament team.

Eastern Michigan ends the season with an overall record of 8-11-3, compiling a 5-6-0 mark in regular season MAC play. Over the course of the season, the Eagles saw three student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams, earned two MAC Player of the Week honors and one United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week award, and received a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award.
