Natalie Cizmas and Emily Smith both finished among the top-25
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team returned to action at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University Saturday, Oct. 5, finishing in 13th place with a team total of 438 points.
"We took some positives away from the day but it wasn't the team performance that we were hoping for," said head coach Sue Parks. "We've dealt with some sickness over the last week and I know that hurt us some. But I feel that we gained some valuable experience racing in a large field with a very fast start. I think that this meet will help us tremendously for Pre-Nationals in two weeks. The team is coming along; we just need to put it all together."
EMU fared better on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course than the Big Ten Conference's lone representative, as Maryland finished 19th with a team total of 651 points.
Graduate student Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp.-Chippewa Valley) posted the Eagles' best time in the 6K race, securing 14th place as she clocked in at 20:15.2 Redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) also shined for the Green and White, ranking 21st with a time of 20:26.9.
Senior Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen) ended the meet with EMU's third-highest finish, placing 98th with a time of 21:14.9, while freshman Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) ran at 21:35.7 to clinch 142nd position. Sophomores Emily DeLine (Newport, Mich.-Airport), Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson), and Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) crossed at 21:55.4, 22:03.5, and 22:05.6 respectively. Additionally, junior Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) reached the finish line in 22:05.6 and 22:09.2, respectively, as sophomore Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View) ended the race with a time of 23:05.0.
Eastern will have another weekend without competition before heading to Terre Haute, Ind. for the 2019 Under-Armour Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 19.
