Women's Cross Country Gears Up for Pre-National Invitational

The Eagles will take on four top-10 programs in high-profile race

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team will compete against some of the nation's top programs at the 2019 Under Armour Pre-National Invitational Saturday, Oct. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Eagles will make their first appearance of the season at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at Indiana State University, where the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship will take place, Nov. 23. EMU will square off with 11 teams that are named in the latest USTFCCCA Top 30 poll, including No. 2 BYU, No. 3 Colorado, No. 7 Michigan, and No. 8 Washington. The other seven ranked opponents Eastern will face in the 64-team field are No. 11 Boise State, No. 11 Florida State, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 20 Illinois, No. 26 Boston College, and No. 30 Oklahoma State. 

The Eagles will enter 12 runners, as graduate student Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School), seniors Abbigail Stemple (Mason, Ohio-William Mason) and Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen), junior Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead), sophomores Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), Emily DeLine (Newport, Mich.-Airport), Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View), Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), and Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson), and freshmen Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), and Linda Geissler (Weinheim, Germany-Werner-Heisenberg Gymnasium Weinheim) are all scheduled to race this weekend. Of the dozen contenders that will be present in Terre Haute, eight set personal-best 6K times at Lehigh University's Paul Short Run, Oct. 5.

Seven of Eastern's runners will take part in the Women's 6K Blue race at 11 a.m., while the remaining five harriers are slated to compete in the Women's Open Race at 1:30 p.m.
