Eagles look to earn 23rd conference title in program's storied history
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team is set to race at the Mid-American Conference Championship Saturday, Nov. 2 in DeKalb, Ill. The Eagles are looking to accomplish their MAC-record 23rd conference title, and 14th under head coach John Goodridge.
Prior to finishing seventh at last year's meet, the Green and White had won eight consecutive MAC crowns and 12 in the previous 13 seasons. Leading the way for the Eagles at the 2018 MAC Championship was senior Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), who placed 19th with a time of 25:14.4, while sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington), finished 20th at 25:15.8.
For his efforts, Payne became the second EMU harrier in as many seasons to garner MAC Freshman of the Year honors, after junior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) received the award during the 2017 campaign. Additionally, junior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) and sophomores Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge), and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) all represented the Green and White last season in Toledo, Ohio, Oct. 27, 2018.
The Eagles begin postseason action after hosting the EMU Fall Classic at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich., Oct. 25. Sophomore Joe Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) was named MAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career after finishing the 5K event in 18th place with a time of 15:55.1. From there, junior Ian Cook (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) clocked in at 16:31.3 for 34th spot, while sophomore Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) competed as an unattached runner and placed 42nd with a time of 16:56.2.
The MAC Championships will be hosted by Northern Illinois University at the North 40 Course, which is located on campus. The day will begin with the men's 8K race at 12 p.m. EDT, followed by the women's 6K race at 1 p.m. EDT.
