DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team claimed the Mid-American Conference Championship with a team total of 59 points Saturday, Nov. 2, in DeKalb, Ill. The Eagles extended their own MAC record with their 23rd conference title, and 13th over the last 15 seasons.
EMU edged second-place Miami by five points to become the first program in MAC history to win the conference title after finishing in seventh place at the previous year's meet. Additionally, head coach John Goodridge was named MAC Coach of the Year after securing his conference-record 14th championship with the Green and White.
"I am so appreciative and proud of this team which has worked for a year to bring this championship back to Ypsi," Goodridge said following the race. "I want to thank the alums in attendance and all the emails and texts I have received. My phone has been blowing up. It's another great day to be an Eagle."
"Heck of a nice birthday present from the boys," Goodridge quipped.
A pair of sophomores earned vital points for the Green and White, as Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) finished in fourth place with a time of 25:35.2, while Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) clocked in at 25:42.8 for seventh place. Junior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) rounded out the top-10 as he crossed the line with a time of 25:49.0.
Senior Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) placed 18th with a time of 26:06.8, while sophomore Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) was close behind in 20th at 26:11.6. From there, junior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) finished 28th with a time of 26:27.1. Three more underclassmen also completed the 8K event, as sophomore Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River), freshman Josh Hill (Amherst, Ohio-Amherst Steele), and sophomore Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge) ended the race with times of 26:34.9, 27:11.5, and 27:29.3, respectively.
