Volleyball Returns to the Convocation Center for Pair of MAC Matches

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team returns home to begin its second four-match homestand of the season, first with a Thursday bout against Buffalo, Oct. 24, and a Saturday soiree against Akron, Oct. 26. First serve against the Bulls is set for 7 p.m., while the match against the Zips will begin at 5 p.m.
Fans can follow both matches using live stats, which are available through EMUEagles.com. The team's Twitter, @EMUVolleyball, will also provide in-match updates throughout both contests. Thursday's match will be televised live on ESPN+, while Saturday will be a pay-per-view stream on Eagle All-Access.
DIG PINK: EMU will host its annual "Dig Pink," night when it squares off with Akron, Oct. 26. The event focuses on the promotion of breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink, and stop by an informational kiosk that will be run by representatives from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
TAYLOR EARNS MAC POW: Senior Riley Taylor was named the Mid-American Conference Setter of the Week by the league office, Oct. 21. Taylor is in the midst of a career-best streak for the EMU volleyball team. Most recently, the Indianapolis native helped lead the Eagles in two conference matches against Miami, Oct. 18, and Bowling Green, Oct. 19. Against the RedHawks, Taylor complied 41 assists, good for a 10.2 assist per set average, while also adding 12 digs and a block. Taylor reached new heights one night later, facing BGSU, as she tallied a career-best 64 assists, while contributing 19 digs.
Taylor has now recorded 40-or-more assists in six straight contests, dating back to Oct. 3. Her 608 assists lead all Eagles, while her 8.26 assist per set average ranks seventh in the conference.
HAUT EARNS BIG RECOGNITION: Thirty women's volleyball student-athletes from member schools of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), who excel both on and off the court, were selected as candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award, the award office announced, Oct. 2. Included in the list of candidates is Eastern Michigan University volleyball student-athlete Cassie Haut.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

ALL-TIME VS. BUFFALO: A relatively young series, Thursday's matchup will be just the 24th between the two programs. A one-sided affair thus far, EMU holds a 19-4 all-time edge over the Bulls. Last season, the squads split two matches, with UB winning at home, and EMU besting the Bulls in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinal.
ALL-TIME VS. AKRON: The Eagles and Zips are set to meet for the 38th time, Saturday, Oct. 26. A back-and-forth history, Akron holds a 19-18 all-time advantage over the Green and White. Most recently, EMU bested the Zips, 3-0, Oct. 20, 2018, in Akron.
DIGGIN SCHOMER'S PLAY: Senior libero Camille Schomer had an impressive two-match stretch last weekend. Against Miami, Oct. 18, Schomer recorded 22 digs, with just one reception error in 19 attempts. One night later, at BGSU, the Rochester, Mich. had a 36-dig performance, a career-best, topping her 31 digs against the Falcons on Oct. 13, 2017. In all, she averaged 7.20 digs per set on the weekend. For the season, Schomer is averaging 4.45 digs per set, seventh-best in the league.
FRANKI IS FIRING: Junior Franki Strefling turned in a season-best performance as EMU went on the road for a weekend doubleheader against Miami, Oct. 18, and Bowling Green, Oct. 19. Strefling paced the Eagles with a season-best 19 kills against Miami, following up her performance with an additional 19 kills one night later, against BGSU. Her two19-kill performances tie for the second-best of her collegiate career.
In addition to her efficient offense, Strefling added 14 and 29 digs, respectively, in her two weekend matches. Her 29-dig outing against the Falcons is a career-best. The Niles, Mich. native now ranks third in the MAC with a 3.30 kills per set average.
ON THE HORIZON: Following its contests with UB and Akron, EMU will remain home for another pair of weekend matches. The Eagles welcome Northern Illinois, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., before hosting Western Michigan, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m.
