Two Eagles post double-doubles; Haut sets season-high with 21 kills
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball dropped a hard-fought, five-set matchup against Ball State University, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24, 16-25, and 8-15, Saturday, Oct. 21, inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (7-11, 2-4 MAC) scored seven of the final nine points in the third set to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals (10-8, 4-2 MAC) came from behind to win the final two sets and halt EMU's two-match winning streak.
Redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) shined for the Green and White with a season-high 21 kills and a team-best five block-assists along with the Eagles' only solo block and service ace. Junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) recorded her second double-double of the weekend and 14th of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) posted a team-best 47 assists, tied for the program lead with 12 digs, and added four block-assists for her second double-double of the weekend and seventh of the 2019 campaign.
Additionally, sophomore Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) led the Eastern defense with 19 digs, while senior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) matched Taylor's total of 12 digs to go with five assists.
EMU did well to force a decisive fifth set, as Ball State finished with a .266 efficiency and ended the night with more digs (84-75), assists (61-54), and kills (71-60). Although the Eagles won the first and third sets convincingly with .231 and .238 clips, respectively, they closed out the match with a .164 rating.
Eastern will hit the road for a weekend of MAC competition in the Buckeye State. The team will face Miami Friday, Oct. 18, before heading to the Stroh Center to take on Bowling Green at the Stroh Center Saturday, Oct. 19.
