YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles) - Freshman Jenna Annecchiarico's (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) career-best effort led the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team to an 81-74 win over Mid-American Conference East Division foe Bowling Green State University inside the Convocation Center, Wednesday night, Jan. 23. The Eagles (10-7, 3-3 MAC) overcame a 10-point deficit early to pick up their third straight win over the Falcons (7-10, 0-6 MAC).
Annecchiarico produced a career night racking up 26 points, including an 18-point first half. The Baldwin, N.Y. native went 8-of-13 from the floor, highlighted by six three-pointers, while also adding four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) completed a stellar night with the first double-double of her career. Johnson grabbed a team-best and career-high 12 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Sophomore Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) and redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) also finished in double figures, adding 17 and 15 points, respectively.
EMU finished the night with 27 points off turnovers, to BGSU's nine and outscored the Falcons' bench 29-8, but Bowling Green outscored Eastern 12-2 in transition.
Eastern shot 45.3 percent from the floor, knocking down 29-of-64 shots, while Bowling Green ended the night 26-of-62 from the field for a 41.9 clip. BGSU held the advantage from behind the arc, 39.3 to 36.4, and from the charity stripe 68.8 to 61.1. EMU's 12 three-pointers tied a season-high for the Eagles.
The Eagles began the game cold from the floor offensively, spotting the Falcons a 10-0 lead four minutes into the first period. Behind the play of Annecchiarco, EMU battled back with a 14-2 run to take a two-point lead into the second quarter.
Eastern Michigan continued to distance itself, going up by as many as seven, but Bowling Green remained within five, 37-32, at the break.
The Green and White maintained the lead throughout the game leading by as many as 15 late in the third, but the Falcons put forth a furious comeback effort in the final stanza.
A layup by BGSU's Kadie Hempfling cut Eastern's edge to three, 68-65, with 6:43 to play. Eastern responded with free throws by Cardwell, a triple by Lewis, and a jumper by redshirt senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) to take a double digit cushion, 75-65, with 4:22 to go.
Free throws and foul trouble allowed the Falcons to claw within a bucket once again with less than a minute remaining, but the Eagles hung on for an 81-74 victory.
The Eagles travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. Saturday, Jan. 26, to take on in-state rival and MAC West leader Central Michigan University, tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
