YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team got back in the win column with a thrilling 64-61 victory over Western Michigan University Saturday, Jan. 12, inside the Convocation Center.
Trailing 61-59, the Eagles (8-6, 1-2 MAC) picked up the first of two crucial stops when freshman Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) drew a charge with 1:06 left in regulation. On EMU's next possession, redshirt senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) knocked down her fourth triple of the final frame to give the Eagles a 62-61 lead with 47 seconds on the clock. The Broncos' (7-7, 1-2 MAC) next possession ended on a shot clock violation with 15 seconds remaining, before Annecchiarico sank a pair of free throws in the waning seconds to seal a three-point win.
Minott recorded her second consecutive double-double and third of the campaign as well as the fourth of her career, leading the Eagles with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while tying for the team-lead with three steals. Freshman Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) set career-highs with 15 points and nine boards off the bench, seven of which came on the offensive glass. Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) also contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and a pair of helpers, while Annecchiarico added a career-best eight rebounds, seven points, three assists, three steals, and three blocks.
EMU finished 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the floor, but clutch shooting and second-chance opportunities trumped WMU's 45.1 percent (23-of-51) efficiency. In total, the Eagles outrebounded the Broncos by a 41-32 margin, and turned 17 offensive boards into 14 second-chance points.
Facing an early 7-2 deficit, the Eagles called a timeout and responded with a 5-0 run to even the score at seven with 4:38 to go in the opening quarter. Trailing by as many as nine near the halfway point of the second period, EMU slowly erased WMU's advantage, closing out the half on a 16-7 run to take a 33-33 tie into the intermission.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the second half, starting the third with an 8-0 run to build a 41-33 edge with 6:59 left in the third. EMU led by two possessions for much of the frame, but WMU narrowed the gap to 49-46 after three quarters.
EMU gained some much-needed breathing space to begin the fourth, as Minott added a pair of triples to open up a 55-49 advantage with 7:37 to go in regulation. However, the Broncos turned the tables with a 12-4 run to grab a 61-59 lead with fewer than 90 seconds to play in the contest.
Eastern Michigan hits the road for a two-game roadtrip next week, beginning with a Wednesday night MAC crossover clash with the University of Akron, Jan. 16. Tipoff between the Eagles and Zips is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside James A. Rhodes Arena.
