Soccer Drops OT Heartbreaker at Buffalo

9/30/2018 2:23:00 PM | Soccer

Kristin Nason pushed her point streak to four straight matches with an assist

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University soccer team was handed a heartbreaking, 2-1, defeat at the hands of the University at Buffalo Sunday, Sept. 30, at UB Stadium. Redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) tallied an assist in the match to push her point streak to four games, the longest by an Eagle since Bianca Rossi tallied a point in four consecutive matches from Sept. 5-28, 2014.

Eastern (7-6-0, 2-2-0 MAC) led at the halfway point, but Buffalo (9-2-0, 3-1-0 MAC) scored in the 49th minute to force overtime. After a collision in the final minute of regulation forced a change in goal for the Eagles, the Bulls notched the game-winner in the 100th minute to top Eastern Michigan, 2-1.

Buffalo held an 8-3 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes, but Eastern made its opportunities count with a 29th-minute goal. Sophomore Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) set up the strike, with a pass to Nason who quickly crossed it into the box, allowing sophomore Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) to beat the keeper to the right corner. Frederick's strike, her first of the season, gave Eastern a 1-nil lead with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.

The Eagles fought off five first-half corners by the Bulls and senior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made two stops to maintain EMU's 1-0 lead into halftime.

Buffalo found the equalizer early in the second period. After a shot by the Eagles went wide, the Bulls came back and tied the match at one apiece with a goal in the 49th minute.

Great saves on both ends of the pitch kept either team from getting ahead over the final 31 minutes. Williams made four crucial saves down the stretch, including one in the final minute. UB pushed a pass through the EMU backline, but Williams sacrificed herself for the stop. The collision brought junior Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary) into goal as the game went to OT tied, 1-1.

In the extra period, Eastern Michigan pieced together chances but could not capitalize, making way for Buffalo. After an EMU foul, the Bulls slotted the game winner inside the far post to hand the Eagles a heartbreak, 2-1, defeat.

The Green and White return home briefly Thursday, Oct. 4, for a 4 p.m. tilt against the University of Toledo, before heading to Bowling Green, Ohio for a 1 p.m. matinee versus Bowling Green State University Sunday, Oct. 7.
