YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University soccer team was tripped up in overtime, 4-3, by the University of Toledo Thursday afternoon, Oct. 4, at Scicluna Field. Eastern Michigan (7-7-0, 2-3-0 MAC) held a 3-2 edge halfway through the second period, but Toledo (7-5-1, 3-2-0 MAC) prevailed with strikes in the 76th and 93rd minutes.
Redshirt sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) and sophomore Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) each registered three points to pace EMU's offense. McNeill's three-point effort pushed her career total to 31, making her the second Eagle to join the 30-point club this season. McNeill along with redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), who accomplished the feat earlier this season, are the first EMU teammates to have 30+ points to their credit since 2014.
Defensively, junior Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary) made a career-high eight saves in the match. Dunn's eight stops were also the most by an Eagle this season and the most since Kaylin Williams tallied 11 at Central Michigan Oct. 26, 2017.
Toledo controlled the match for the first 20 minutes of play, but Eastern Michigan held off several UT chances to keep the game scoreless midway through the opening period.
EMU broke things open with a 28th-minute goal, as the Eagles capitalized on a set piece. After her initial corner service was booted back to her, redshirt sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) curled a shot inside the far post to put Eastern up, 1-nil.
Toledo responded with two goals before the half to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
The Green and White was re-energized out of the half, taking it to the Toledo defense. Serving up a few opportunities early, EMU put it all together in the 58th minute to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) dropped a pass to Olson at the top of the 18, who played a ball to the far post where Nason volleyed it home to tie the match.
Riding the momentum on a counter, sophomore Parys Kerr (Whitby, Ontario-Pickering) delivered a ball to the near post where McNeill flicked it onto Olson. Waiting at the far post, Olson buried the shot as Eastern regained an advantage, 3-2.
The Rockets capitalized on an Eagle miscue in the 76th-minute to level the match at three apiece.
Eastern created its fair share of chances in the final 10 minutes, but could not take advantage as the match went to overtime tied, 3-3.
Three minutes into OT, Toledo slotted the game-winner into the upper 90 to hand EMU a 4-3 defeat.
