JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team placed 10th at the Battle In Beantown in Jamaica Plain, Mass. Friday, Sept. 21. The Eagles ended with a team score of 254 points, edging No. 11-ranked Providence College (257).
"Sydney and Natalie had strong races," said EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. "It was great to see them up front battling with the leaders. I think that placing well in such a large field is going to give them the confidence that they need to run aggressively in future big meets. As a team, we fell slightly short of our goal but I believe that we learned some valuable lessons about how to race in a big meet on a such a tight course. We know that we must close our 1-5 gap if we are going to be successful down the road. That is going to be our focus in the weeks to come. We're excited about getting back out there and continuing to move forward at Notre Dame."
EMU's 10th-place finish is also one place better than where it finished the last time the Eagles took part in the Battle in Beantown, as they placed 11th with a team score of 267 points.
Leading the Eagles for the second consecutive meet was senior co-captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), who was the fourth runner to cross the finish line out of over 200 total participants. Meyers clocked in at 17:18.9, finishing just two seconds behind the second and third-place harriers, and nine seconds behind the individual champion. Not far behind Meyers was fellow co-captain and redshirt senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), who also finished within the top-10, claiming sixth place with a strong time of 17:24.6.
Graduate transfer Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) continues to impress in just her first year running for the Eagles, turning in EMU's third-best finish, placing 48th with a time of 18:05.9. Sophomores Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) and Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton) rounded out Eastern's top-five finishers, finishing 102nd and 114th, respectively.
The Green and White continues its 2018 regular season Friday, Sept. 28, when it travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on another tough field at the Notre Dame Invitational.
