BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team came up short in its Mid-American Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 15, at the University at Buffalo inside UB Stadium. Eastern (2-1, 0-1 MAC) limited Buffalo (3-0, 1-0 MAC) to just 165 yards in the second half, but were never able to overcome an early deficit in the 35-28 setback.
Junior quarterback Mike Glass III (St. Louis, Mo.-Hazlewood Central (Southwestern College)) led the Eagles' offensive play with two touchdowns on 284 yards passing with a career-high 17 completions. He also led the Eagles' rushing attack with 69 yards and a score. Taking over for graduate transfer Tyler Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich.-Detroit Country Day (Iowa)) (8-of-12, 64 yards) in the second quarter, Glass stepped into the game and gave the Eagles back-to-back scores with 75 and 76-yard long balls down the field, to end the first half with 201 yards passing. Glass' favorite target was senior Blake Banham (St. Paul, Minn. - Cretin-Derham Hall), who notched his second 100+ yard receiving effort this season with a career-high 159 yards on nine receptions. Senior Shaq Vann (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) also had an strong performance, rushing for 30 yards and scoring his first touchdown of the season in the second quarter to keep it at a one-score game.
The Green and White defense held the Bulls (3-0) scoreless in the third quarter and were led throughout the matchup by junior defensive back Vince Calhoun (Middletown, Ohio- Middletown), who notched a season-high 12 tackles (five solo, six assisted). Senior Ikie Calderon (Neptune, N.J.-Neptune) also racked up double digit tackles, finishing with a season-high 11, and doubling his total for the year.
Buffalo was led by Tyree Jackson's 326-yard outing, throwing 21-for-26 (80.7 pct.) with three passing touchdowns. K.J. Osborn led the Bulls with 188 yards receiving and was the target of all three of the Bulls' passing touchdowns. Emmanuel Reed added 68 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns. The star of UB's defensive effort was defensive end Chuck Harris, finishing the night with eight tackles and two-and-a-half sacks. Khalil Hodge added 14 tackles to the Mid-American Conference matchup.
Down 14-0 after one quarter of play, Glass III entered the game, to lead Eastern to its first score of the day off a season-long 76-yard pass to junior Arthur Jackson III (Oakland, Calif.-Wood (American River College)), which also served as Jackson's first touchdown as an Eagle.
The Bulls immediately came back with their own deep ball, scoring on a 70-yard pass on a two-play, 10-second scoring drive to regain a 14-point, 21-7 lead. In true shootout fashion, Glass III and the Eagles' offense came back on the field with a vengeance, and answered with a 16-second, two-play drive, finished off by a 75-yard TD toss to Banham.
The second quarter was capped off with an Eagles' scoring drive down the length of the field, ending with a one-yard rush from Vann into the end zone to cut Buffalo's lead to 28-21 at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter, UB found the endzone in the fourth to make it a two score game, 35-21. Eastern rallied back, feeding off the energy of a forced fumble by junior Maxx Crosby (Colleyville, Texas-Colleyville Heritage) with under four minutes to go, as Glass III punched it in. The PAT made it 35-28 with less than a minute to play, but an onside kick was recovered by Buffalo to seal the, 35-28, defeat.
Eastern Michigan takes a break from Mid-American Conference play as it makes its first trip to California since the 1990 season, taking on the San Diego State University Aztecs Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PST. This will be the Green and White's first matchup against SDSU.
