SHANGHAI, China (EMUEagles.com) —
After months of training at the Eastern Michigan University Boathouse, the Eagles were well-represented on the United States World University Championships rowing team in Shanghai, China, Aug. 10-12. EMU Head Coach Kemp Savage led the squad while his assistant, Julie Quoss, also filled the same role for the team.

The Eagles also had three athletes compete as assistant coaches Emily Wasz and Delaney McGuire and rising junior Amanda Flora partook in the championships. Wasz was a member of the Varsity 8, Flora a member of the Varsity 4, and McGuire rowed in the Lightweight Double Sculls.

"The WUC was a life changing event," Savaged exclaimed. "Seeing all the athletes come together as one team was a great experience and all the athletes dealt with the hurdles of the weather and heat incredibly well. I am so proud of all the athletes for taking a step into a bigger competition field and racing with the best in the world."

The V8+, including Wasz, finished second in their primary race on the first day of the championships behind only Great Britain. Their performance allowed them the second day off before capturing bronze on the final day with a final time of 6:22:32.

Flora and the V4+ finished third out of four teams in their opening heat. The repechage on the next day fared well for the U.S. as they finished second and moved on to the final day's 'A' final, in which they finished fifth.

The Lightweight Double Sculls, consisting of McGuire and Kate Ruffalo of the University of Wisconsin-Madison opened the championships finishing fifth in the second lightweight heat of day one. They finished fifth again in the secondary heat on the next day before finishing fifth once more in the 'B' final on the last day, finishing 11th overall.
