NEW ORLEANS, La. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team nabbed United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the association announced Thursday, July 26. EMU earned the recognition both as a team and on the individual level.
Along with the three student-athletes who were placed on the All-Academic team, Eastern claimed the achievement as a team for the second straight year.
In order for a team to garner the distinction, it must carry a team grade point average of 3.0-or-better. A total of 361 NCAA Division I teams were honored by the USTFCCCA, 141 of which were men's programs.
Earning the individual accolades for EMU were track and field recent graduate, Nick Raymond, as well as then-freshmen Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) and Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England). This was the second honor earned by Raymond, while it serves as the first for Day and Richardson.
The three were instrumental in Eastern claiming the Mid-American Conference Triple Crown - winning the cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field championships. In fact, Day and Raymond were both named Most Valuable Performers in the indoor championship, while Day was also named the Freshman Track Performer of the Year. Moreover, Richardson was pivotal in the 4x400 relay team claiming gold in both championships, earning himself a pair of First Team All-MAC honors in his rookie season.
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 624 men earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the 2017-18 track and field seasons.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, each student athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of two athletic standards.
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
