Bogdanova Sets Sights for 3000m Steeplechase National Championship

This is the third consecutive year she will compete at the NCAA Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University women's track and field redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) concludes her career as an Eagle at the NCAA Championships this weekend in Eugene, Ore. Bogdanova will compete in the 3000m steeplechase semifinals Thursday, June 7, at 4:30 p.m PDT.

This will be Bogdanova's third straight trip to the outdoor championships, having qualified in the 5000m during the past two seasons. Last year, the redshirt senior finished national runner-up after racing to an impressive program-record time of 15:43.84. Additionally, her second-place finish was the highest placement since Lela V. Nelson won the heptathlon championship in 2005, and warranted her outdoor championship All-American honors as just the 15th student-athlete to earn the accolade. If she takes home the honors this weekend, she will become just the sixth Eagle to be named an outdoor All-American in multiple years.

Moreover, this will be the third national championship she has competed in during the 2017-18 athletic year, as she competed in both the cross country and indoor track and field title meets. Most recently at the indoor championships, Bogdanova competed in both the distance medley relay and the 3000m run. In the DMR, Bogdanova assisted the quartet to a seventh-place finish to reel in First Team All-American honors. She also turned in a stout performance in the 3000m run during the next day of competition, finishing five places higher than her 16-seed at 11th, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:12.81.

Although this will be her first time competing in the steeplechase at the championships, Bogdanova is poised to put together a top-notch performance after posting a program-record in the event at the NCAA preliminaries, May 26. There, she finished with a time of 9:51.29, placing fourth and besting her previous personal-record time of 10:04.88 that she set just two weeks before regionals at the Mid-American Conference Championships. For her efforts at the conference title meet, which included championships in both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m run, Bogdanova was named MAC Most Valuable Performer for the second straight season.

If Bogdanova places in the top-five of her respective heat, or holds one of the two next best times outside of the top-five from both heats, she will compete in the final round Saturday at approximately 4 p.m PDT.
