YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team is quickly approaching the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, which will be held on the campus of the University at Buffalo Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12. The Eagles will be competing for their first outdoor title since the 2015 campaign.
Although the Green and White have placed second in the last two seasons, EMU still leads the conference in total team championships with 23. Additionally, the Eagles are coming off an indoor season which saw them capture their 15th title. Moreover, Eastern heads into this weekend with 17 performances in 12 different events that sit in the top-three rankings in the conference.
In the sprinting events, EMU holds the top four times in the 400m, with redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) setting the standard with a time of 46.95. Ranking just behind Brown in second is freshman Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts), while junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and freshman Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) rank third and fourth, respectively. Richardson also ranks third in the 200m with a time of 21.00.
A consistency throughout the entire 2018 campaign, Eastern dominates the distance rankings with the top-three times in the 5000m, and three of the top four marks in the 10,000m. Redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) ranks first in both the 5000m and 10,000m, with times of 13:58.91 and 29:20.92. Fellow redshirt senior teammate Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Erie) sits directly behind Andresson in both events, ranking second in the 5000m and 10,000m with times of 14:14.00 and 29:25.66. Redshirt senior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) rounds out the 5000m top-three with a time of 14:19.58, while also coming in at fourth for the 10,000m with a time of 30:22.75.
EMU also heads into the championship weekend with the top times in both the 400 and 1600m relays. Along with ranking first in the conference, Eastern's 400 (40.26) and 1600 (3:07.38) relay times serve as the sixth-fastest times in EMU history.
After earning MAC Freshman of the Year for his performance in the indoor season, freshman Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) currently ranks third in the 1500m with a time of 3:53.08. In addition, sophomore Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) finds himself with the second-best 110m hurdles time this season, clocking in at 14.19.
In the field events, EMU has a representative in the top-three in the hammer, javelin, triple jump, and pole vault. Eastern's highest placement comes in the hammer throw, with junior Zach Harkey's (Huron, Ohio-Huron) personal-best throw of 61.69m that he notched in last weekend's Toledo Invitational, May 3-4, ranks second in the conference. Junior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) ranks third in the javelin with a throw of 66.01m, while junior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) and sophomore Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio-Edgerton) hold the third-best marks in the triple jump (15.17m) and pole vault (5.06m), respectively.
