Late Inning Too Much for Eastern to Overcome

4/3/2018 1:51:00 PM | Softball

Sophia Holland produced her fourth RBI of the season

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Fighting against the rain and wind, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 5-2 decision against Mid-American Conference West Division foe, the University of Toledo, Tuesday, April 3, at Scott Park Softball Complex.

At the dish, Eastern (4-26, 0-7 MAC) struggled to connect with their bats as they mustered just two hits on the day. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) each produced a hit, while Holland notched her fourth RBI of the campaign.

The Rockets (22-13, 6-2 MAC) got on the board first in the opening frame with a single run, but the Eagles did not stay quiet for long.

Akles broke things open for EMU in the top of the second with a single to short before advancing to second on a sac bunt by senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace). Pinch running for Akles, junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) rounded third for home after Holland ripped it up the middle for an RBI-single.

After Toledo bunted in a run to regain the lead in the bottom of the frame, the Green and White responded right back in the third.

In the top of the inning, senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.) drew a walk before stealing second. Hostetler took advantage of a Toledo defensive miscue to cross homeplate and knot the score back up at two.

It was a pitchers dual until the fifth when UT plated three more runners in the fifth and sixth to seal the 5-2 loss.

On the mound, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) was a workhorse for the Green and White, throwing 5.2 innings. Trujillo (2-8) gave up eight hits, five runs, three of which were earned, while fanning two.

The Eagles return to the diamond Wednesday, April 4, when they travel down Washtenaw Avenue to take on the University of Michigan. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
