EMU Moves Up One Spot Headed into Final Day of MAC Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Freshman Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) is in 17th-place after posting a third round 82 Saturday, April 28, at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships. Battling through challenging scoring conditions at the par 72, 7,331 yard Sycamore Hills Golf Club, Celone has a three day tally of 282 (77-73-82) and is in position to record EMU's best freshman showing since Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) tied for eighth at the 2015 event.
Overall, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team moved into fifth with a 926 (312-305-309).
With temperatures in the high 40s and winds gusting up around 20 miles per hour for much of the action, Ball State fired a team round of 295, the best of the day by six strokes. At 890 (+26) through 54 holes, the Cardinals own a 10-shot lead over defending champion and 29th-ranked Kent State. Akron (+50) and Miami (+50) are tied for third with one round to play.
Junior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and sophomore Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) are tied for 18th with a 17-over 233. Breault posted a third round 76 while Sudinsky added a 79. Freshman Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) is tied for 28th with a 236 (85-75-76), while Ross rounded out the lineup with a 241 (82-81-78).
BSU's Michael VanDeventer remaining at the top of the leaderboard despite seeing his lead shrink to one during the round. After a score of 77, he is two-over par and will take a three-shot lead over teammate Johnny Watts and Akron's Mitchell McFarland into the final day.
The final round of the MAC Championships is set for Sunday, April 29. The action begins at 9:30 a.m. with a split tee start. EMU will go off the first tee starting at 9:30 a.m. in the first wave of tee times with Miami and Toledo.
