HILLSDALE, Mich. & PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team capped off day two of the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. in record-setting fashion Friday, April 27.
The Penn Relays were highlighted by a fantastic performance in the 4x1500. The contingent made up of redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), seniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) and Jordann McDermitt (Davidson, Mich.-Davidson), and junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) set a program record with their time of 17:42.74, which placed third in a strong field of relay teams. Additionally, that time beat the previous school record of 18:18.36 that was set in 1987.
Back in Michigan, the Gina Relays saw a pair of Eagles earn event titles. Junior Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio-Withrow) got things started in the 100m hurdles, where she clocked a time of 14.21 to place first. Finishing just behind O'Neal was senior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North), who claimed bronze after finishing in 15.15. Sophomore Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) also put together a strong personal performance in the 100m hurdles, setting a personal-record time of 16.24 to place 11th.
Senior Janina Pollatz (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) was the second Eagle to come away with a gold medal, as she placed first in the pole vault with a height of 3.97m. Eastern closes out both the Penn and Hillsdale Gina Relays tomorrow, with action in Philadelphia starting at 7 a.m. with the Olympic development men's 5k racewalk, and competition in Hillsdale commencing at 10 a.m. starting with women's pole vault.
