HILLSDALE, Mich. & PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team completed the first of three days with representatives in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. and the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich.

The Eagles had outstanding performances from both the relay teams that competed in the Penn Relays.

The 4x100 team consisting of senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), junior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), and sophomores Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) and Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) got things started at the Penn Relays by clocking in at 45.45 to finish second in their respective heat and eighth overall. Additionally, that time ties for fifth all-time in EMU's laurels. Based on their top-nine finish, the cohort will compete in tomorrow's Championship of America Invitational.

Jones and Johnston also competed as members of the 4x400 relay, joining freshmen Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) and Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) in a 10th-place finish after completing the relay with a time of 3:43.53. Based on their finish, they earned a trip to the college final, which will commence Saturday.

Freshman Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton) had a tremendous showing in the 5000m, crushing her old PR of 17:18.09 with a time of 16:55.79, placing 22nd against a strong pool of competition.

In the Gina Relays, freshman Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) paced the Eagles with a time of 17:17.36, placing third in a pool of over 100 runners in her first official competition in the 5000m as an Eagle. Furthermore, senior Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) acted as the lone Eagle in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing ninth with a time of 12:07.43.

Action in both the Hillsdale and Penn Relays will get started at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
