This is the fifth consecutive year the Eagles will compete in the Jesse Owens Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team heads into another busy weekend, as the Eagles will compete in the Siena Heights Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational Friday, April 20 in Adrian, Mich., as well as the Jesse Owens Invitational in Columbus, Ohio and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., Friday-Saturday, April 20-21. EMU is no stranger to the Jesse Owens Invitational, as this weekend serves as the fifth straight year Eastern will compete in the Columbus-based meet.
Last season's invitational saw the Eagles claim three top-three finishes throughout the weekend, with then-redshirt junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan Russia, Lyceum #83) getting things started in the first day of competition. Bogdanova raced to a third-place finish in the 1500m, running to an impressive time of 4:25.18. Right behind her was then-sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), who finished fifth with a then-personal record time of 4:28.01.
In the second day of activity, then-junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) highlighted the track events, placing third in the 200m dash with a previous-best time of 23.86. In the field events, then-junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) came away with Eastern's highest finish of the weekend, winning silver in the triple jump with a distance of 12.55m.
Currently, all four of the aforementioned student-athletes are slotted in the top-five of the conference for the respective events they competed in during last season's Jesse Owens Invitational. Jones holds the top time in the 200m (23.50), Dreimane ranks second in the triple jump (12.85), Bogdanova sits at third in the 1500m (4:20.96), and Meyers ranks fifth in the 1500m (4:22.84).
