Eastern Competes Strong in Trio of Meets

EMU had 11 performances throughout the three meets that warranted personal-bests

ADRIAN, Mich., CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. & COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team saw representatives in three meets have career days, as the Eagles competed strong in the Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational in Adrian, Mich., Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., and the Jesse Owens Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
Throughout all three meets, Eastern had 14 performances serve as personal records. Additionally, EMU had five performances rank within the top five for their respective events.
EMU's highest placement in the Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational was captured by junior Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville North), who notched second place in the 800m with a time of 2:20.99.
In the field events, all three of Eastern's representatives in the hammer throw and discus throw each set personal records in both events. In the hammer throw, freshman Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica) reached a distance of 43.89m, freshman Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) threw to a mark of 41.77m, and freshman Jaycie Harris (Lambertville, Mich.) finished with a distance of 32.55m. In the discus, Luthman paced the squad with a throw of 36.16m, while Harris and Clarke notched marks of 35.87 and 35.32m, respectively. Sophomore Catherine Mittiga (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) also had a career-day, setting a personal-record distance of 5.39m in the long jump.
In the Virginia Challenge, junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) and freshman Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) represented Eastern in the 800m. There, Meyers paced the duo with a personal-record time of 2:12.66, placing 29th against a strong pool of competition, while Distelrath finished 35th with a time of 2:19.11. Moreover, redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) competed in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time this season and put together a strong performance, finishing sixth with a time of 10:19.54.
EMU also sent two student-athletes to the Jesse Owens Invitational, where senior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill.-Rockford Lutheran) competed in the 1500m and sophomore Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) participated in the javelin throw. Both of them had their best performances to date in their respective events, with Mesa setting a career-time of 4:44.22, and Bourg reaching a career-mark of 40.82m.
The Eagles pick back up tomorrow at the Virginia Challenge and Jesse Owens Invitational, where the first event for each meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.
