Big Innings Too Much to Overcome at Louisville Softball Classic

3/9/2018 2:50:00 PM | Softball

Amanda Akles notched her 100th career hit against Bradley

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened the Louisville Softball Classic by dropping a pair of non-conference games at Ulmer Stadium Friday, March 9. The Eagles fell to Bradley University, 19-5, in the opener before a 5-3 setback to the University of Massachusetts.

Game 1: Eastern Michigan 5, Bradley 19

Junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) paced the Green and White, as she went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) notched her 100th career hit in the first inning with a three-run double, becoming the third Eagle to reach the milestone this season. The La Habra, Calif. native joins seniors Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) and Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace), who both crossed the threshold earlier this campaign.

On the rubber, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) earned the starting nod, while freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) made an appearance in the fourth at relief. Trujillo (2-5) gave up 12 hits, including a pair of homers in the loss. Hurley struggled against the Braves (8-9), as she gave up a grand slam followed by a home run.

Game 2: Eastern Michigan 3, UMass 5
The Eagles mustered a total of six hits against UMass, as Akles led the Green and White at the dish. The junior pounded out two hits to push her hitting streak to eight games.

After the Minutewomen (8-6) jumped to an early 3-0 lead, the Eagles began to chip away at the UMass' lead with runs in the fourth and fifth.

UMass pushed the margin to three again in the bottom of the fifth with a homerun and a RBI-single.

Akles started the sixth frame with a double before crossing home on on RBI-single by freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood). However, that would be as close as Eastern would get in the 5-3 loss.

Junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) threw her seventh complete game of the season, moving her ninth in program history with 25 for her career. Through six innings of work, Miranda struck out four, while giving up 10 hits.

The Eagles return to field Saturday, March 10, for the second day of the Louisville Softball Classic. Eastern will rematch Bradley at 12:20 p.m., before going head-to-head with host Louisville at 5:30 p.m.
