Brandice Olmos surpassed the 100 career hit milestone in the loss
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Errors proved to be detrimental for the Eastern Michigan University softball team as it fell to the University of the Incarnate Word, 5-3, on the final day of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, Sunday, March 4. The Eagles (4-11) committed three errors throughout the afternoon, two of which led the Cardinals (2-5) to score.
As it has all weekend, Eastern continued to see progress at the plate as EMU produced nine hits. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) led the Green and White as she went 3-for-4 at the dish, including a solo home run. The homer was the second of the weekend for Akles as she is now tied for 10th in program history with 16 career home runs.
Senior Brandice Olmos' (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) two hits against the Cardinals pushes her past the 100 career-hit milestone, becoming the second Eagle to do so this season, as fellow senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) reached the achievement against Marist, Feb. 25.
After UIW jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first, the Eagles plated a pair of runners in the second and third frame to put them ahead.
In the second, senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) continued to shine at the plate as she pounded a double to the left field fence to plate sophomore Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant) and even the score at one.
Olmos' 100th career-hit came in clutch in the third frame as her single to left field brought junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) in from third to hand Eastern the lead.
After the Cardinals scored three in the next two innings, Akles' home run was able to get the Eagles within one. That would be as close as EMU would get, however, with UIW tacking on another run in the fifth to cap the 5-3 loss.
On the rubber, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) threw her sixth complete game this season, but ultimately picked up the loss as she moves to 2-6. Miranda gave up 10 hits, including a solo home run, through six innings of work.
The Eagles return to the diamond as they make the trek to Louisville, Ky. for the Louisville Slugger Invitational. Eastern Michigan will first face Bradley University Friday, March 9, at 10 a.m., before squaring off against University of Massachusetts at 12:30 p.m.
