RALEIGH, N.C. & WESTERVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team continued its outdoor season Friday, March 30, as they had representatives at both the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and the Otterbein April Fools Invitational in Westerville, Ohio.
In the Raleigh Relays portion of Friday's slate, EMU had five distance runners compete throughout the 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m run.
Eastern's best finish at the meet came from senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), who set a new school record in the 1500m with a blazing time of 4:16.83. That time bested her old mark of 14:19.74, and topped Sue Tomanek's time of 4:18.09, which she set in 1987.
Following Cizmas in the event was freshman Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead), who got her outdoor season kicked off with a solid time of 4:31.63 to secure 36th place out of more than 130 competitors.
The Green and White also had two competitors perform well in the 5000m, as redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) and junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) placed 10th and 18th out of over 135 runners, respectively. Additionally, Meyers' time of 16:23.95 serves as a new personal best and moves her up to fourth all-time in program history.
In the Otterbein Invitational, EMU saw three top-five finishes, including sophomore Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West), who ran to a 100m dash time of 12.72 to claim first place. Highlighting the field events was freshman Crystal Washington, who placed first in both the long and triple jump, marking distances of 5.22m and 11.26m, respectively. Sophomore Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) and freshman Catherine Mittiga also put together strong performances in the long jump, with Salzbrunn placing second with a jump of 5.21m, and Mittiga notching fourth with a personal-best 5.12m. Salzbrunn also set a new career mark for her efforts in the 100m hurdles, racing to a finishing time of 16.29 to finish sixth behind teammate junior Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio-Celina), who placed fifth in 16.27.
Cizmas will round out EMU's weekend tomorrow, March 31, as she takes part in the 800m at the Raleigh Relays. The event is scheduled to commence at 2:05 p.m.
