Three distance runners will travel to compete in the 10,000m run
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team continues its regular season schedule this weekend, Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, when they compete in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. This will be the fourth consecutive year the Eagles will compete in the early season meet.
Redshirt seniors Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Steddelijk Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) will all be competing in the 10,000m run.
At last year's relays, Eastern had exceptional individual performances, with 23 of the performances serving as new career-bests. Additionally, one of the personal records set was done so by then-freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio-Edgerton), who marked a height 4.72m in the pole vault to take one of EMU's two event titles on the weekend. The other title captured by the Eagles came in the 4x1500 relay, where the squad ran to a time of 15:37.52.
The first day of last season's competition also saw a pair of top-five finishes in sprints, with then-junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) placing fourth in the 100m with a previous personal-best time of 10.68, and then-sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) finishing fifth in the 400m, also earning a previous career-mark of 47.94. Moreover, former student-athlete Willy Fink had a tremendous performance in the 1500m, running to a time of 3:47.09 to take 11th place out of a pool of over 100 runners.
Outside of the 4x1500 team taking first place, the second day of action was highlighted by both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each placing in the top-five. Furthermore, then-sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) had an outstanding throw in the javelin, placing third with a distance of 64.65m.
Altogether, Eastern had eight top-five finishes and performed strong against some of the best programs in the country to start out the season on a high note.
The Green and White look to once again get the season off to another fast start, after having already notched an event title in its first meet of the season, winning the 4x100 relay at the Baldy Castillo Invite, March 17.
This weekend's action is scheduled to begin 9 a.m. Friday, starting with the 5000m run before opening up the field events with discus at 10:45 a.m. The competition will continue into Saturday, with javelin commencing at 9:45 a.m. and track events starting at 11 a.m. with the last section of the 10,000m. Live results can be found by clicking here, or by following the link on the track and field schedule page located on EMUEagles.com. The relays will also be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra for a block of time on both Friday and Saturday.
