Eastern narrowly fell to the MAC preseason favorite before topping DII's No. 45-ranked team
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team split a tough Sunday double header against the University at Buffalo and Wayne State University, falling to the Bulls in a tight 4-3 match at the Chippewa Racquet Club, while prevailing over the Warriors 4-1 at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
"This was a really long day of tennis for our team and we really gave a lot of effort in both matches," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "Buffalo is a fantastic team with a lot of talented players, but I feel like we did a great job of pushing them at pretty much every position and we were within a few points here and there of being able to take the match out right."
Even with the freshman duo of Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) and Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) cruising to a 6-1 victory at No. 3, Buffalo snagged the doubles point by taking the other two spots.
After a win at No. 3 singles for the Bulls, Eastern senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) got the Eagles on the board with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. UB clinched the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 4, but Regalado and senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) finished their matches with victories. Regalado won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, while Gogvadze gutted out a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 to remain undefeated on the season.
"Hopefully we can play well enough the rest of the season to have another chance to play them in the Mid-American Conference tournament," Wiseman added.
After falling in the day's opener at home, Eastern and Wayne State traveled to nearby Ann Arbor for a neutral-site match at the Varsity Tennis Center at the University of Michigan. The Warriors are a member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and are ranked No. 45 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
EMU once again fell behind by conceding the doubles point with losses at No. 2 and No. 3 to start the match. The Eagles would recover on the singles side, however, making quick work at the top four spots to secure a 4-1 victory.
"Our Match with Wayne State was a tough one because they are a very good DII team and we just had the emotional letdown of losing a really close match just an hour before," said Wiseman.
Senior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) started the singles showdown with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4, while Gogvadze won convincingly at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4. The Tbilisi, Georgia native is now an amazing 14-0 at No. 1 this season. Fellow senior Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) picked up her first win of the spring playing at No. 2, winning 6-3, 7-5, and Ansaloni picked up clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4.
"After coming out flat and dropping the doubles we did a good job of regrouping and getting a sweep of the top four single spots to clinch the victory," Wiseman added. "We look forward to a good week of practice and getting back to work and our MAC schedule next weekend."
Though EMU's winning streak was snapped at nine, the Green and White are now 12-4 on the season. Its 12 wins are the most since the 2014 dual season.
Eastern Michigan returns to #MACtion Friday, March 30, when it welcomes Ball State University to the Chippewa Club for a 1 p.m. match. The Eagles will then host Saginaw Valley State at the Varsity Tennis Center at the University of Michigan at 5 p.m.
