The Eagles defeated BSU, 4-3, and swept SVSU, 7-0
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team swept its doubleheader against Ball State University and Saginaw Valley State University Saturday, March 30, defeating the BSU Cardinals 4-3 at the Chippewa Racquet Club, while sweeping aside SVSU 7-0 at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Courts.
"This was a huge win for our team," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "After we came so close against Buffalo last week, this match started very much the same way. Last time we lost an extremely close doubles point and couldn't close out a couple matches in straight sets and ended up losing them in 3 sets, this time out we were able to close out those matches to secure the win. I'm very proud of how we played and fought today."
The Eagles fell to an early deficit in their first match of the day, allowing Ball State to claim the doubles point and jump to an early lead. Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) were the only pairing to come out with a victory, finishing with a score of 6-3 at No. 1.
Gogvadze built off that momentum and made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 singles, giving EMU its first point of the afternoon by besting her counterpart 6-2, 6-2. That win kept Gogvadze undefeated on the season, bringing her overall record to an impressive 14-0 mark.
BSU followed by winning No. 3 and 4 singles to push its lead to 3-1, however, Mayerova grinded out a 7-5, 6-4, victory at No. 2 to keep the Eagles in play. Trailing by one, Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figuera Pachero) finished off her opponent with a 6-0, 7-5, win at No. 5, giving senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figuera Pachero) an opportunity to clinch the match at the No. 6 spot. The Alicante, Spain native did just that, battling to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, win to give Eastern its second victory in conference play this season.
Crossing town to take on NCAA Division II opponent Saginaw Valley State at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center, Eastern Michigan rolled to a 7-0 sweep to improve to 14-4 on the season.
"SVSU is a gritty group of tough players that really made its work to earn the victory," said Wiseman. "Their top two singles payers are as talented as any No. 1 and No. 2 in the GLIAC, they really played a couple of fantastic matches against us. Renu had a great match and didn't lose a game I singles or doubles, and Anna only lost 3 games combined. It was really good to see that from them since they haven't gotten as many matches in this season as we would have liked."
Eastern mixed up its doubles teams, putting the freshmen duo of Regalado and Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vincia) at the No. 1 spot. The pair responded with a 6-1 win for their third as partners. Mayerova teamed with senior Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) for a 6-0 sweep at No. 3, while the senior pair of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Almoyna won handedly at No. 2, 6-2.
Gogvadze improved her record to 15-0 on the season with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win at the top singles spot, while Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) came away with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3. Almoyna picked up her second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over her won at No. 5, while fellow senior Renu Sharma notched a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6.
"Overall I'm just as pleased with the effort and focus we showed today, as I am with the results," said Wiseman.
