EMU Tennis Drops Heartbreaker at Western Michigan, 4-3

Eastern is now 14-5 on the season and 2-2 in MAC play
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker at Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University Sunday, April 1, at the West Hills Athletic Club.
EMU (14-5, 2-2 MAC) fell behind after losing the doubles point and could never quite recover, as WMU (11-7, 2-0 MAC) would rattle off wins at No. 2, 3, and 4 singles to seal the conference victory.
Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khakhani) teamed with Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) to cruise to an easy 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Broncos would win the other two matches handedly by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
Eastern was able to jump back in the match when senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueros Pacheco) swept her competition at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Before the Green and White was able to pull out its next two wins, Western clinched the match with wins at No. 4, 3, and 2. Freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) picked up a win at No. 5 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory, while Gogvadze continued her winning streak with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) victory at No. 1.
The wins for seniors Almoyna and Gogvadze are notable because they mark the 11th and 18th-straight wins, respectively. Gogvadze is a perfect 17-0 in dual play this season playing at No. 1, while also having a win under her belt from tour play in the fall. Almoyna is an impressive 13-3 overall this spring and is 10-1 while playing as the Eagles' No. 6.
Eastern Michigan is back in action Friday, April 6 when it travels south for a pair of matches. First, the Eagles take on MAC foe Miami University at 1 p.m., and then take on the University of Dayton at 6 p.m.
