Eastern returns to MAC play Sunday, April 8 at Bowling Green

DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team had a tough road trip Friday, April 6, falling at Mid-American Conference foe Miami University, 5-2, at the Riverside Athletic Club, before losing to the University of Dayton by the same score at the Five Seasons Sports Club.

The first match started off on the wrong foot, as Miami jumped ahead with the doubles points thanks to a 6-1 win at No. 1 and a 6-3 victory at No. 3. The Redhawks continued their roll on the singles side, coming away with wins at No. 1, 3, 4, and 5 singles. Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) was injured during the No. 1 singles match and came up short for the first time this season.

EMU's lone victors for the match were junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic), who won 7-6, 6-1 at No. 2, and senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco), who won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6.

"It's hard to take any positives away from today," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We left a lot of opportunities to win both matches out on the court, and then to lose Ani to injury really compounds the loss."

The second part of Friday's double dip yielded similar results, as Eastern once again had to battle from behind on the singles side after falling in the doubles point. Dayton took wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles by 6-2, and 6-3 scores, respectively, to start the singles portion of the match with the advantage.

UD wasted little time in taking a commanding 3-0 lead, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. EMU fought its way back into the match with another pair of wins from Almoyna, this time a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 5, and Mayerova, who won 6-3, 6-4 playing at No. 1. Unfortunately for the Green and White, they would get no closer, falling in its second match of the day.

"Majda and Alejandra both had two quality wins today, but that's about it," said Wiseman. "We still really need to figure out some combination of doubles teams so that we stop putting so much pressure on our singles lineup. We have three big MAC matches left and need to find a way to win them to secure a spot in the tournament."

The Eagles look to get back on the right track with a Sunday match at Bowling Green State University, set to begin at 1 p.m. if played outdoors at BGSU, or 5:30 p.m. if forced to play at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
