EMU Tennis Upends Oakland, 6-1

The Eagles have now won nine matches on the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returned to action Friday, March 16, winning its ninth match of the season with a 6-1 victory over Oakland University at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
After falling at No. 1 doubles, the freshman duo of Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) and Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) rallied to even the score for the Eagles at No. 2 with a 6-4 victory. With the doubles point hanging in the balance, the senior pairing of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) pulled out a 6-4 win at No. 3 to get EMU the point.
"This was a tough win against a very young and talented Oakland team," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "Even though the 6-1 score looks like we dominated the match that was far from the case. I told our team before the match that Oakland was going to give us extremely tough matches all the way through our lineup and they absolutely lived up to it."
Eastern used the momentum to begin a roll on the singles side, as junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) came away with the Eagles' first win at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Regalado helped put EMU on the verge of clinching with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles, and Martinovska secured the match with a 7-6, 6-3. The Eagles also picked up wins from Almoyna at No. 6, 7-5, 6-4, and No. 1 from Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"We were fortunate to come out on top and got some good tough matches in and that is great preparation for next week when we host Akron and Buffalo," said Wiseman. "Nothing is going to come easy the rest of the season, so we need to get used to fighting tooth and nail for every point against tough competition."
The Eagles host another in-state foe Saturday, March 17, when it welcomes the University of Detroit-Mercy to the Chippewa Racquet Club for a 2 p.m. match.
