Tennis Hosts In-State Foes Oakland and Detroit This Weekend

The Eagles take on the Golden Grizzlies Friday and the Titans Saturday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returns to action at the Chippewa Racquet Club for a pair of matches this weekend as it welcomes Oakland University, Friday, March 16 for a 1 p.m. match, and the University of Detroit Saturday, March 17 at 2 p.m.

    The Eagles (8-3) have already surpassed their 2017 total for wins, and are led by senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani), who is 9-0 as EMU's No. 1 singles player. Junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) has added seven wins at No. 2 singles, and senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) has six singles wins.

    Oakland has started the dual season 6-6, and has victories its last three matches over Omaha, Lewis, and Chicago State. The Golden Grizzlies are led by Darya Maltseva, who has a 7-2 overall record and is 5-0 at No. 2 singles. She and Sofia Borcuti, who is 6-4 on the season, are the only two players with singles records above .500. Last season, EMU picked up a win at home over OU by a 6-1 final.

    Detroit enters the weekend with a record of 5-9 this season, picking up wins in two of its last three matches.
The Titans travel to the Chippewa Club for their final non-conference bout of the season, opening up Horizon League play Saturday, March. 24 against IUPUI. UDM has just one player with a singles record of .500 or better, as No. 1 Iris Thioux is 7-7 in dual play.

    
    EMU looks to reach the 10-win plateau for the first time since the 2014 season when it went 15-9 in dual play.
