The Eagles move into MAC play with a record of 10-3
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team ran its winning streak to eight matches with a 6-0 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy Saturday, March 17 at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
"It was good to add another win before the start of conference play to help build confidence as we look to carry over our solid play to our MAC schedule," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We have been making some changes to our line-ups the last week to try to put ourselves in the best position possible in conference play and Detroit and Oakland provided excellent competition to try out those combinations."
With Detroit Mercy playing with just five players, the No. 3 doubles pairing of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) were granted a win by walkover. The No. 1 duo of Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) secured the doubles point with a convincing 6-2 victory.
The Eagles were awarded another forfeit win at No. 6 singles to jump out to a 2-0 lead, and quickly won the match as Martinovska took care of business at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2, and Barcelo Almoyna won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3. Gogvadze wrapped up the points for EMU with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 win at No. 1.
Gogvadze improves to 11-0 as the Green and White's No. 1 singles player this season, while Martinovska and Barcelo Almoyna each won their sixth dual matches.
"Fortunately we played well the last two days and were able to secure the wins," said Wiseman. "Our seniors have really done a great job of getting critical wins all season and this weekend was no different with Ani, Andrea, and Alejandra picking up crucial points in both matches."
Eastern Michigan opens up Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 23 when it welcomes the University of Akron to the Chippewa Racquet Club for a 1 p.m. match.
